International Students

Siena College is an independent, Catholic school in the Dominican Tradition for young women in Years 7 to 12. Siena is a place where the diversity and unique gifts of the students in in our care are acknowledged and celebrated, and where we aim to empower young people to go out and make a difference in the world.

Siena College welcomes applications from International Students in Years 9 to 12. Our preferred intake is at Year 9 as this enables a student to settle into Siena College, consolidate their English language skills and catch up on any shortcomings in the subjects they might intend to pursue in Years 11 and 12, when undertaking the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

All applicants should follow the How to Enrol procedure below. You can apply directly to Siena College or engage an Agent to help with your application.

* As part of the supporting documentation, students who have been studying in a school outside Australia are required to undertake an English language proficiency assessment with Australian Education Assessment Services (AEAS): www.aeas.com.au (see Step 2 below for further information).

The Head of Admissions will be in contact with you as soon as possible to confirm your application has been received.

Step 2: English Language Proficiency, Educational Qualifications and Interview

Siena College requires evidence that the student’s English proficiency and educational qualifications are sufficient to successfully meet the entry and curriculum demands of the intended course of study.

Assessing English Language Proficiency

Assessments with AEAS assist in determining whether a student's English language is at a level that will allow them to meet the curriculum demands or if intensive English (ELICOS) is required prior to commencement at Siena College. An AEAS report should be provided at the time of application. Assessments are valid for up to 12 months. If ELICOS is required, this will be detailed in the Offer of Enrolment.

The College’s minimum requirements for International Students are detailed below:

Year LevelAEAS Minimum Score Achievement
Years 9 and 1075+
Years 11 and 12 (VCE)80+

If the minimum score is not achieved, ELICOS is likely to be recommended and, in some cases, a retest will be required before enrolment can be confirmed.

ELICOS (English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students)

ELICOS is designed to teach the English language skills required for an Australian school. When a student does not have English as their first language, it is likely they will require ELICOS prior to commencement at Siena College. The recommended number of weeks of ELICOS will be determined by the College.

Siena College’s preferred English Language Centres are: Avalon College (residential) and Hawthorn-Melbourne.

Assessing Educational Qualifications

A student’s educational qualifications are assessed against the requirements of the relevant year level of the Australian curriculum the student is requesting entry at. The Victorian Curriculum F-10 achievements standards are relevant for students in Prep to Year 10, and for students in Years 11 to 12, the relevant accredited senior secondary qualification is VCE.

Entry requirements for Year 9 to 12 students:

A “C” grade (60%) or better for the majority of core subjects. Siena College may assess the educational qualifications of prospective International Students by requesting:

  • Educational certificates
  • School reports from a student’s home country and/or the school they attend/ed internationally or in Australia
  • Course materials from the school they attended in their home country and/or the school they attend/ed internationally or in Australia
  • ELICOS reports

Interview

On receipt of an Enrolment Application and all supporting documentation, the student will have an interview with a member of the Siena College Leadership Team.

The College can only offer a place if a vacancy exists and the College can support the learning, wellbeing and social needs of the student. Application interviews, along with the AEAS assessment and student academic reports, are used to assess a student’s suitability for enrolment.

Step 3: Offer of Enrolment

Siena College may be in a position to provide an Offer of Enrolment when a student has met the minimum requirements for English proficiency and academic requirements, had a successful interview, and there is a vacancy at the required Year level.

To accept this place, we require six month’s tuition prepaid and a non-refundable enrolment fee of AUD $1,000 to be submitted, in addition to the completed paperwork, by the specified deadline.

Step 4: Preparing to Study in Australia

Once the Offer of Enrolment has been accepted, payment and signed Enrolment Agreement received, you will receive a Confirmation of Enrolment letter.

From here, our International Student Coordinator will support you as you prepare for your first day. This may include, applying for a student visa, organising homestay arrangements (if necessary), preparing medical insurance and more.
